Welcome to the award winning Roman Army website

This is one of the largest Roman army sites to be found on the web.
It has earned special recognition by the following organizations. Click on the icons for details.

About the site:

This is a very large site. There are presently 59 sections with over 600 illustrations. If printed as a book the site would be over 800 pages. The illustrations are not there for decorative purposes, as might be the case in some books. Instead, the drawings form the very heart of the material for they provide the very tools for analyzing of the Roman army's tactics. All of the drawings are done in AutoCad. For those unfamiliar with AutoCad, this is a computer assisted drafting program that allows for extremely accurate drawings. That means that the every formation is drawing accurately as to size and position. It is this feature that provides a powerful tool for analysis.

This is not a site for those seeking easy answers or "authorative" conclusions. The entire thrust of the material is to point out the difficulties with much of the data published in books by well known authors. The illustrations serve as a set of tools that can be used to analyze what is said about the Roman army and its tactics.

About the author:

I have often been asked what academic degrees I have in this field. I am not a professional military historian. However, in my view that is the wrong question. The value of any aspect of what is in this site should not depend on the presumed "authority" of the author, be that me or someone I cite, but solely on the merits of the material itself. This is stuff to think about, not to simply accept. The truth is that we know so little about the details of how the Roman army functioned that every author depends on guesswork, supposition and reasonable assumptions. This site is intended to provide some tools for the discerning reader to use in assessing statements made about the Roman army -- including statements in this site itself.

I can be contacted at this . I welcome comments on the material in the site, especially thoughtful analysis of aspects of the Roman tactical system. I do not answer questions for school reports. The entire site is copyrighted and I only allow images or material from the page to be used in very limited situations and then only with specific case-by-case permission.

How to use the site:

Some related pages are linked to each other, all of the pages are linked to the Site Map which serves as the principle navigation tool.
